My mom has had a really hard time moving her left shoulder … it happened all of a sudden and she’s been to several doctors and all of them told her it’s a frozen shoulder.. and they told her the treatment is either cortisone injection or a surgery where she gets fully sedated and her shoulder is then moved around …. but she went with cortisone injection with the condition she do some little exercises and take some medications.

But that was about 4 or 5 days ago and so far it’s not getting any better .. as far as I know cortisone should have made her feel it’s alright already, but she has a hard time moving it..

She said it’s better now … but still she can’t really do anything with her left hand because her shoulder pain makes it impossible.

The doctor said before she took the cortisone injections that if this doesn’t work (cortisone) he’ll give her gel injections …

Is my mom’s shoulder okay ? is there something wrong that made her unable to respond to cortisone alright ?

Please help, I’m really worried about her.

Thank you.
My mom did actually take physical therapy and some stupid doctor told her she should go with electric therapy which made it even worse.. she’s currently doing minor exercises though after taking the cortisone injection.. and before that she was doing physical therapy and she was told that when it heals it will only be 80% functional.
And she’s also taking medications now .. some minor pain killers and so on..

First, to increase the motion in the joint
Second, to minimize the loss of muscle on the affected arm (muscle atrophy)
The importance of stretching and exercises cannot be overemphasized as these are the key to successful frozen shoulder treatment. Patients cannot expect to have successful frozen shoulder treatment if they perform exercises only when working with a therapist. These exercises and stretches must be performed several times daily.

Moist Heat
Applications of moist heat to the shoulder can help to loosen the joint and provide relief of pain. Patients can apply moist heat to the shoulder, then perform their stretching exercises–this should be done at least three times daily. Moist heat can be applied by using a hot-soaked washcloth on the joint for 10 minutes before stretching.

Physical Therapy
Physical therapists can help a patient develop a stretching and exercise program, and also incorporate ultrasound, ice, heat, and other modalities into the rehabilitation for frozen shoulder. As said previously, it is important that patients perform their stretches and exercise several times daily–not only when working with the therapist.

Anti-inflammatory Medications
Anti-inflammatory medications have not been shown to significantly alter the course of a frozen shoulder, but these medications can be helpful in offering relief from the painful symptoms.

Cortisone Injections
Cortisone injections are also commonly used to decrease the inflammation in the frozen shoulder joint. It is unclear the extent of the benefit of a cortisone injection, but it can help to decrease pain, and in turn allow for more stretching and physical therapy. What is known, is the cortisone is only effective when used in conjunction with physical therapy for the management of a frozen shoulder.

And she’s also taking medications now .. some minor pain killers and so on..
She doesn’t want to go with the surgery because of the fully sedation part..
and she’s gone to 6 doctors in less than a month :S and they’ve all diagnosed her with a frozen shoulder.

I’ll be honest. If it is a true frozen shoulder get the sedated procedure and then do aggressive physical therapy afterwards. You can spend an entire year and thousands of dollars doing PT with minimal results. And do it soon because with every day your mother is developing disuse atrophy which could be difficult to reverse.

However, a true frozen shoulder is often a metabolic problem. There has been some old injury there and its screwed up the nervous system. Its causing lack of blood flow and contracture. I treat all my patients with frozen shoulder using acupuncture first as it is the most gentle and works the best.

You should also know that I have seen several diagnosed frozen shoulders that weren’t at all and they were torn rotator cuff muscles.

I hope this gives you something to think about.

So, I already asked a specific question about my guinea pig (How can I tell if my guinea pig is pregnant) but now I have a few more general questions about guinea pigs.

Background information: I have two guinea pigs, about 5-6 months old, Clover and Nutmeg. I feed them twice (and a half) a day: morning, [afternoon], and evening – food & veggies in the morning, a veggie in the afternoon, and food & timothy hay in the evening. Three times a week, I give them fruit. I recently started to hold Clover everyday for about 30 minutes, and just recently started allowing her one hour of "free time." I clean their cage once a week, replenish their water daily, and they have a fairly large cage with a wooden house and toilet paper tubes to chew on. They get along very well, there is the occasional argument over food/treats, but other than that, they get along perfectly. They’ve been together since they were really young. On a different topic, sometimes I hear one of them sneeze. I never catch them in the act, so I’ve no idea who it is.

About Clover – She is definitely the more shy one. Even if I make a small noise, she will freeze or run into her house. She’ll let me pet her in her cage, but as soon as I pick her up, she starts kicking her legs around. When I am holding her (yes, correctly), she tries to climb up my shoulder. She doesn’t bite, but keeps trying to escape. If I offer her food while I’m holding her, she’ll refuse it. I don’t know her weight, but she is much on the larger side.

About Nutmeg – She is more outgoing than Clover. I can reach into their cage and pick their food bowl up and she won’t run and hide. However, she loves to squeal. She just does it randomly, when there’s no reason. When I try to pet her or pick her up from her cage, she runs wildly around, but when I finally grab her, she doesn’t flail her legs. I haven’t weighed her, either, but her weight seems to be fine. She doesn’t get as much attention as Clover, as she is my sister’s guinea pig and I don’t always have the time to hold her and get her the exercise as I do for Clover.

Now, the questions. (Sorry for the long info)
1. Overall, do they seems to be okay? Is there something about their food or exercise schedule that I should change? Or their cage?
2. Is the sneezing a bad thing?
3. Is holding them for 30 minutes good? Longer? Shorter?
4. Is letting them exercise for an hour good? Longer? Shorter?
5. How long will it take for them to get used to me & be comfortable in my arms if I hold them everyday for 30 minutes?
6. Anything bad/good about Clover?
7. Anything bad/good about Nutmeg?
8. Am I feeding them too much or too little (not regarding their size)?
9. How often should they go to the vet for a check-up and how often should their nails be clipped?
10. Any other helpful information or advice?

Thank you!

1. How big is the cage? The minimum for 2 females is 7.5 square feet. What kind of hay do you feed? They need grass hay. Do they always have hay available? What pellets do you feed? Oxbow, Kleenmama (only online http://www.kmshayloft.com/) Sweet meadow and Mazuri 5664 are the only acceptable pellets. Fruits should be limited to twice a week.

2. How often is she sneezing? If it only once in a while thats normal. If you use air dried pine or cedar switch beddings.

3. 30 minutes is good

4. An hour is fine. The minimum is 45 minutes unless their cage is small. Then they need a longer floor time. You should let Clover have floor time at the same time as Nutmeg

5. It varies form pig to pig. It took my pigs months before they got used to me. Some pigs get used to people sooner.

6-7 I guess I dont understand the question. They sound like normal guinea pigs.

8. How many veggies do you feed them? They need 1 cup, per pig, every day. Once they are 6 months old they need 1/8 cup of timothy based pellets.

9. They dont need to go to the vet for checkups. Just bring them in when they are sick. You should weight them weekly so you notice weight loss since weight loss is often the first sign of illness. Nails need to be clipped once a month.

10. Your doing a good job taking care of those piggies.

Okay maybe not some, a lot if you really think about it. I was in the gym when my coach said that I was bigger then most of the girls. And I was wondering how do you lose about 30 pounds, I do have a lot of muscle though, but I do have about three inches of fat, I work out Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday for about an hour each, what are good exercises that I can do? I can’t run because my knee will mess up and just freeze and it hurts to move, also my shoulder is hurting right now. I’m 15 weigh 200 and am 5’7-5’8 please help, and please, no rude comments .
I cut out soda only one a week or even that, I drink coco and tea and water is all.

Eat smaller portions, keep working out, and believe you can do it:) good luck!

I injured my shoulder a while back and went to a surgeon who sent me for an MRI thinking I had a torn rotator cuff. It turned out to be a frozen shoulder, and I was sent to a physical therapist. Now that my shoulder has improved somewhat, I find I have one remaining group of problems which a friend who is the trainer for a local athletics team has said is biceps tendinitis. I have a follow-up appointment with the orthopedic surgeon, but I am nervous. I was wondering if someone with experience wished to share.

My symptoms:

Cannot reach behind back with affected arm.
When I try to reach behind back, I have a good bit of pain in the upper back quadrant right at the joint and running down the arm toward the biceps muscle.
If I do the exercises I was given by the physical therapist aimed at reaching behind my back with this arm, I also suffer a feeling like my smallest finger and half my ring finger on that hand are going to sleep. They tingle and lack feeling.
If I sit still for a while, I feel I must move the arm to relieve the stiffness and pain that develops in the area of the mid- to lower-bicep.
In the morning after I have been asleep and still is the worst time for pain and stiffness in the shoulder and bicep.
Certain motions somewhat similar to the motion of pitching a ball overhand cause a good bit of pain in the mid- to lower-bicep area.
Some examples of motions that have caused me pain include when I went to throw a throw blanket over the back of my recliner, and when hot liquid was splashed on the hand such that I reflexively jerked it away while attempting to fling off the hot liquid.

Despite doing my exercises religiously for two months, I have seen no improvement in these issues. I have seen a very great deal of improvement in other areas as when I started I was in constant pain about equal to the pain I currently feel when performing one of the motions in the examples above and lifting my arm out to shoulder level in front of me brought pain so severe it took my breath away and caused black spots to appear in my vision. I now only feel pain when I sit still too long or if I try to reach behind me or certain other motions. I think the reason the trainer thought bicep tendon was probably attached to the dead feeling I sometimes get in my smallest finger and half my ring finger of that hand as apparently the tendon and that nerve run in a groove together along the back of the arm near the shoulder. Apparently swelling and damage to that tendon can cause it to come out of the groove and possibly even push the nerve out, resulting in the falling asleep feeling.

The trainer and my physical therapist thought my surgeon might likely give me a shot and send me for more physical therapy, but the trainer said surgery was also a possibility. That’s what is making me nervous.

Thank you!

You very well could have bicep tendinitis. But also what could be a big part of the problem is the infraspinatus muscle,a rotator cuff muscle. Trigger points in this muscle will refer pain to the front of the shoulder (bicep area) down the arm into the thumb and hand, and restrict range of motion in the shoulder joint, See if this looks familiar.http://myofascialtherapy.org/symptom-checker/symptomcheck/symptom_upper_infraspinatus.html If it does, show it to your PT and have some specific treatment on this muscle. Hope this helps, good luck! http://www.triggerpointtherapist.com/blog/infraspinatus-trigger-points/infraspinatus-trigger-points-the-magicians-of-shoulder-pain/
